How many "un-flower-like" features did your kid add to their flower?
MATERIALS NEEDED
Paper
Drawing Supplies
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Take out some paper and any kind of art supplies that your kid likes to use.
2. Challenge them to draw an exciting new species of flower. Get as inventive as possible; they might add a face, arms or colorful hair.
3. Ask them to tell you all about their drawing: what is different about this flower and why?
4. Now you and your kid can come up with a name for their invention. For a more difficult challenge, ask them to draw a make-believe house, animal or person.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT
Children learn to draw representations of objects that look the same, and copy the same steps each time. For example, children’s drawings of their family in front of a house often look very similar. In this activity, your kid is challenging what a flower looks like, which helps to develop cognitive flexibility.
