How often did your kid clap with the target word out of 10 opportunities?
MATERIALS NEEDED
Children's book
Music that your kid is familiar with
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Find a book that your kid likes that uses words that are repeated often, such as Dr. Seuss books. (We are using "cat" as an example below.)
2. Say: Listen to my voice. You will have to listen very carefully. Whenever you hear me say the word “cat”, clap your hands.
3. Practice by reading the first few pages of the book, and see if your kid claps each time you read the designated word. Praise them if they are successful.
4. If they miss one, read the sentence again; if they still do not notice, remind them to clap when they hear the word “cat”.
5. If they are successful, add in some music as a distraction. Say: Now I’m going to play some music! Ignore the music and listen to my voice. Whenever you hear me say the word “cat”, clap your hands.
6. Play a song with words your kid knows in the background and continue reading the book.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT
Improving your gifted kid’s focus skills is something that should be honed in order for them to be less distracted, keeping their attention on one task at a time, as this is a good habit to develop in them at a young age.
